Have you ever noticed how you like talking to some people, but hate talking to others? Do you wish people would confide in you or felt more comfortable talking to you? If so, you'll like this simple, yet powerful, communication secret.

You probably know that to really communicate with people, you need to carefully listen. But what do you do after you listen? How do you let the person know you heard what he or she said?

"Acknowledgment: Something said or done to inform another that his statement or action has been noted, understood and received. 'Very good,' 'Okay,' and other such phrases are intended to inform another who has spoken or acted that his statement or action has been accepted."

An acknowledgment can be a nod or a smile, a 'thank you' or an 'okay.' It lets the person know that you received his or her communication.

For example, if I ask you for the time and you reply, 'It's nine o'clock,' how would you know I received your answer if I don't give you some acknowledgment? You would not know if you have been heard.

10 Acknowledgment Tips

1. Some people do not talk at all. At some point, they may have tried to express themselves and were ignored. They have given up the idea that anyone listens to them.

2. Other people talk all the time as they get the idea no one hears them. They are still trying to get through. If someone would acknowledge them, they would relax.

3. When employers give their staff members a good acknowledgment for completing their work, the staff members feel proud and satisfied.

"Boss, I finished that project ahead of schedule and under budget!"

"Good job!"

If the boss does not acknowledge the project completion, the employee will either repeat the statement or give up and lose interest in talking to the boss.

4. Employees who are not acknowledged often demand more pay because pay is another type of acknowledgment. Without any acknowledgments, an employee will eventually give up and find a boss who appreciates the employee's hard work.

5. Bosses and parents need acknowledgment as well.

Silence.

6. If you forget to thank people for their gifts, you eventually get no gifts. If you never respond to personal letters, no one will write to you. If you never return telephone calls, your phone eventually goes silent.

7. Acknowledging email communication is also important. With filters, spam and viruses in the system, you might not know your message gets through if the person does not write back, "Thanks for the note."

8. Children who are not acknowledged get upset and demand more attention. You see kids like this in stores. "Mommy? Watch this! Mommy? Watch me! Mommy? Look at me! Mommy? Mommy?" Parents who acknowledge their children have calmer, more confident children.

9. Dogs and cats are happier when you acknowledge their efforts to please you. Ignore them and they might cause problems.

10. When people do not acknowledge you, you repeat yourself. You start to nod. You talk louder.

You try acknowledging yourself. You get angry or yell.

Finally, you might decide "to heck with it" and stop talking.

How to Give Great Acknowledgments

Skilled use of acknowledgments can seem magical. You can encourage conversation, end conversation, make people feel understood and more.

To properly acknowledge someone, pay attention and wait until the person is finished. Then indicate you received and understood the message. "Okay," "Thanks," "Good," "All right," "I got that," "No problem," "Makes sense," "Sure thing," "Fine," "Roger" or whatever else you want to say.

If you also make sure the person heard your acknowledgment, the communication is complete.

If you use the correct amount of force and the correct amount of intelligence, you succeed at anything you do.

Selling Cars

Ross and Sue work at an auto dealership selling cars. Neither are doing very well. Each has a different approach to selling.

Ross talks loudly, grabs your hand and pats your back. He likes to bully people into taking test drives and making offers.

Ross says, "This REALLY is the best car for you! You look GREAT in it! I'll get you an INCREDIBLE DEAL! Sit down. Let's make an offer. Wait a minute! You can't leave yet!"

Sue takes a different approach. She says, "You know if you consider the engineering and statistical advances of this model, and compare it to the consumer surveys of the past three years, you can make a wise decision. It's good to analyze your cost-per-year maintenance figures against the gas mileage, depreciation of the vehicle and initial cost."

Ross tries to close the deal by saying, "Come ON! You'll never get a BETTER DEAL! You need to buy it NOW! What the heck are you waiting for?"

Sue tries to close the deal by saying, "Your decision should be based on your income, your commuting needs and your values. I suggest you weigh the pros and cons while discussing the issue with your family."

Neither approach is very successful.

Unsuccessful Leadership

You find unsuccessful management everywhere. Certain leaders are too forceful. "Get the project done by tomorrow or you are fired." "I DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE SICK. GET THE SALES UP RIGHT NOW!"

They might have short-term success, but never long-term success.

Other unsuccessful leaders are intelligent "nice guys." They say, "According to our market research and strategic planning you can increase sales by 13% by emphasizing our more profitable line of products and targeting our top 20% wholesale buyers."

Neither approach is very successful.

The Winning Combination

To succeed, you need your own balance of force and intelligence.

A good executive not only gives accurate instructions and good planning (intelligence), he or she must also have enough persistence and intensity (force) to push the plans through.

For example, the boss concludes the prices are too low. He writes an order raising the prices. The sales staff object. The boss maintains a position and insists on the price increase despite all opposition. To succeed, and have enough money to pay the staff, the boss must not waiver.

Successful salespeople give the customer plenty of information about the product and then use, as needed, some passion to motivate the customer to buy. He or she may also have to disagree with the customer's demands for a lower price.

Successful parents not only work out rules that are fair and beneficial to the family, they enforce those rules. No rules or no enforcement are both unsuccessful.

You can spend all day planning your success, but you also need to work as many hours as necessary to make it happen.

1. You are driving down the road enjoying some music and some idiot cuts in front of you making you slam on the brakes to avoid a collision. You send him a mental curse and hope he has a rotten life. This doesn't make you feel any better. In fact, you feel irritated and start driving recklessly yourself.

You decide to be great. You try to love the person, but the best you can do is find a little understanding. You think, "He must be late for work" and decide to wish him well. Within seconds, you feel better and forget about it. You go back to enjoying your music.

2. Two years ago, you and friend Jim bought a delivery van together. He used it during the day to make deliveries from his flower shop and you used it at night to deliver newspapers to your delivery people.

One night, your delivery man calls and says, "The van's not at Jim's where I normally pick it up."

You called Jim who said, "Oh, I sort of rented it to this guy."

You said, "We need it to get the papers onto the streets."

He said, "Well, actually I sold it because I had to pay off some bills. I'll pay you back, I promise!"

You can't believe he did this to you. You yell at him and vow to never speak to him again. You jump in your car and spend all night moving newspapers.

Every time you think about Jim and the van, you get upset. Even two years later, you feel the hatred every time you see your new van. It makes you unpleasant to be around.

You plot revenge in several ways. You'll spray paint his store windows. You'll ruin his credit. You'll spread rumors about him.

But after two years, you decide to be great about it.

You call Jim. He apologizes again and you say, "Don't worry about it. I'm sorry too. Do you want to go fishing this weekend?"

You feel better than you've felt in two years. Your employees like being around you again.

3. Before you meet the new president of your business support group you dislike her. You've been hearing rumors and bad opinions about her all week. For example, you heard she doesn't like real estate agents and you're a real estate agent.

During the group's social hour, you see the new president walking toward you. She doesn't smile when she looks at you. You feel snubbed.

You decide to snub her back and you turn around and ignore her. Your feel your face turning red with anger. You start to plan how you can ruin her.

But then you decide to be great. You ignore all the rumors and decide to love the new president.

You get introduced and give your best smile. "Congratulations! I hope you enjoy your new position here!" You instantly treat her like a close friend.

The new president is relieved to have a supporter. She confides in you. "I'm so nervous about this! I sure want to help the members of this group."

You become good friends. You find out she manages five large apartment complexes.

She sends you so many people who want to buy condominiums and houses that your sales double that year.

4. You overhear one of your employees scream on the telephone, "Well, if you don't like my attitude, you can take your business elsewhere!" She slams down the telephone and then sees you standing there. You feel a little hatred as it appears she's turning away customers.

Many bosses would say, "You treat a customer like that again and you're fired!"

But you want to be a great boss and continue to love your staff even when you have reasons not to.

You say, "What happened here?"

"This jerk asked me if I was new or just stupid."

"So you yelled at him and told him we didn't want his business?"

"Right."

"Well if we don't sell to jerks, we won't make any money and will have to lay off some staff. You need to deal with jerks if you want to succeed on this job. Can you do it?"

"Yea, I suppose. I'll bite my tongue and be polite no matter what they say from now on."

"Do you need help learning how to do that?"

"No, I'll be fine. Thanks."

Being great leads to a sane, cheerful, profitable operation.

Seven Recommendations

1. Start loving everyone you know at home and at work.

2. Whenever someone gives you a good reason to not love him or her, be great and love him or her anyway.

How to Break a Bad Habit

Taking Control

After you started to eat lots of junk food routinely, you probably felt you could easily change the habit. You could change how much junk food you ate, the kind of junk food and how often you ate junk food.

But then you could not longer change. You were eating junk food routinely. Junk food with most meals, junk food in front of the television every night and so on. You still felt you could stop eating junk food, but you were fixed in a routine.

Finally, you found you could not stop eating junk food. You had to arrange parts of your life around junk food. It became your master.

How to Take Better Control

"Control consists entirely of starting, changing and stopping. There are no other factors in positive control. If one can start something, change it's position in space or existence in time and stop it, all at will, he can be said to control it, whatever it may be." -- L. Ron Hubbard

So how can you increase your self-control? One approach is to improve your ability to start, change or stop what you do.

Find things you can start about the bad habit. For example, maybe with smoking you can start smoking each day at a different time. You decide when to start or when not to start for the day. You take more control of the "start" aspect of control.

Find something you can change about the bad habit. If you want to quit smoking, make changes to the habit. Switch brands. Smoke two cigarettes at the same time. Smoke with your other hand. Simply work on changing the habit.

Find things you can stop about the habit. For example with smoking, stop smoking when you are driving. Stop smoking for an hour. Stop smoking half-way through a cigarette. Just get better at stopping.

As you gain the ability to start, change and stop the habit, you will notice you now have control of the habit.

Good News For Us!

Well, it appears as if my speculation is finally coming true...
Over a year ago, I predicted that Yahoo would follow Google's AdSense lead and release a similar program of their own. They'd have to in order to keep up as Google is cleaning their clocks with the increase in revenue they are getting from AdSense.
That day is getting close. VERY CLOSE.
If you snoop around the 'Net (and know how to do it effectively) you can uncover some interesting stuff...
Like web sites running what appear to be 'experimental' Yahoo ads that are very much like AdSense ads. They are (no surprise) ads being served from Overture's database (which Yahoo owns).
Check out the ads on the leftside of this blog.
If and when Yahoo releases and AdSense competitor this is nothing but GREAT NEWS for marketers like us. AdSense is a fantastic way to make money from publishing web sites. BUT... right now it's very dangerous. There are many markets right now that wouldn't be very profitable if AdSense went away. Other affiliate programs just won't make much money on these sites. So we NEED a competitor. You never want all your eggs in one basket with anything you do with your marketing and AdSense is no exception.
A similar program from Yahoo will only spur competition with Google and most likely drive AdSense revenue higher.
Let's hope that this experimental ad program turns out to be something REAL.

I want share a little service with you that i really like. it is called Google suggest. this service is not so much a spy tool as it is just a really cool research tool.

Google suggest is currently in a BETA version, but you can still use it right now.

this service is really cool, but little-known tool which will bring up numerous suggestions of related terms as i being typing in a keywords into the search box.

For example if you type in golf school, as you begin typing it in, it shows you related terms that you may want to consider searching for instead.

Another cool thing about it is that it shows how many search engine results there are for each keyword.

it is a great way to determine related keywords, or to dissect a market when doing market research.

As you click on one of the suggested terms in the drop down menu or box, you get the actual Google search result for that keyword.

it is a great little tool that you should really consider using when doing your initial market research, or if you simply want to ply around trying to come up with more content site ideas.
